Signs and Symptoms of Depression

There are many different ways that depression can emerge - it may be a product of the change in seasons, a large life event, or even could be caused by other mental health disorders or chronic health conditions. Many people experience depression after the death of a loved one, becoming unemployed, or being diagnosed with a terminal illness, but many others experience depression without ever going through a large event like this.

Here are some of the most common ways to tell if you may be experiencing depression:
  • You are feeling constantly unhappy or discouraged about your life.
  • You are feeling unmotivated, exhausted, helpless, or hopeless.
  • You are frequently criticizing yourself or being unnecessarily mean to yourself.
  • Your brain feels foggy, or you feel a general “blah” feeling.
  • You have difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
  • Your relationships are suffering due to your lack of engagement.
  • You feel as though nobody understands how difficult life is for you.

Many of these symptoms are perfectly normal responses to everyday life and the stressors that we encounter, but when multiple symptoms are present it could indicate that you may need to seek special treatment from a Coquitlam and Burnaby depression counsellor.

Treatment Options for Depression

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is one of the most successful treatment options for use in the management and treatment of depression. Some of the methods that your Coquitlam and Burnaby depression counsellor may use include:

  • Assessing and reframing problematic thought patterns.
  • Dealing with overwhelming problems in a more manageable and positive way by breaking them into smaller pieces.
  • Collaborate on realistic goals for you that promote success rather than failure.
  • Actively engaging in behaviours that create new and healthy behavioural cycles.

The main goal of depression counselling is to examine your feelings, behaviours, and thought patterns to see how those are affecting and reinforcing your moods. From there, your counsellor can work with you to make a plan that includes tangible actions and behaviours to help you start feeling better. Your counsellor can even give you specific techniques that you can use when you are feeling good to help keep you in that positive headspace and avoid further depressive episodes.
