Anxiety Therapy & Counselling in Coquitlam

Did you know...

Anxiety is the most commonly experienced mental health disorder. Feeling anxious, worried, or stressed can be tiring and taxing on your body, but you don’t have to deal with it alone. Anxiety is one of the most treatable disorders and it is one of the top reasons why individuals seek out anxiety counselling services in Coquitlam and Burnaby.

If you think you might be dealing with anxiety, read on to see what the common signs and symptoms are and how our team can help you live a more peaceful, calm, and confident life. I am based in Coquitlam and Burnaby and can help you take back the power in your day to day.

How Do I Know if I Have Anxiety?

Anxiety can present differently in different people, and some individuals may not even realize that what they are experiencing is related to an anxiety disorder.

Below are some of the most common signs and symptoms of anxiety:
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitation or chest pain
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Excessive sweating
  • Obsessing over one thing
  • Feeling unable to relax
  • Muscle tension, fatigue, weakness
  • Feeling a sense of dread
  • Stomach pain or loss of appetite
  • Trouble staying asleep

While one of these symptoms may not point to an anxiety disorder, the presence of multiple symptoms may be a good indicator that you should check in with a counsellor.

There are many different types of anxiety disorders with their own specific symptoms, such as:
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Panic Disorder
  • Substance/Medication-Induced Anxiety Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia)
  • Specific Phobias (e.g., fear of spiders, heights, flying)
  • Agoraphobia
  • Separation Anxiety Disorder
  • Selective Mutism

What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety can come to the surface at different times for different people – perhaps from experiencing a traumatic event such as the passing of a loved one, or even just from ongoing stress at work. Anxiety can be frustrating when it appears out of the blue, and it can be disheartening when others simply tell you to “calm down” and “don’t worry”. These reactions can even contribute to further anxiety!

Anxiety Treatment Options

The one technique that cannot help anxiety is avoidance – avoiding situations that make you anxious will not cause the anxiety to go away. Chronic experiences of anxiety can be addressed through therapy and counselling, and even if you don’t know the underlying cause of your anxiety you can still develop skills and techniques to manage your symptoms. Allow me to help you regain control and find ways to reduce or eliminate your anxiety altogether.

Common anxiety therapy techniques include:
  • Identifying triggers and learning to de-escalate yourself, calm down, and get out of a negative thought pattern
  • Learning tools and techniques to reduce stress and overall anxiety
  • Accepting your anxiety symptoms and realizing that they are temporary
  • Focusing on the present moment and your surroundings
Once you are matched with the best suited counsellor, we will work with you to build a treatment plan that works for you. One common therapy method that we use is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which is proven to be one of the most effective treatments for a number of anxiety disorders, including phobias and chronic panic attacks.
