IFS Therapy and Counselling In Coquitlam

What is IFS?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate and evidence-based therapeutic approach that helps individuals understand and heal their inner worlds. At its core, IFS recognizes that each of us is made up of different “parts,” each with its own unique feelings, beliefs, and roles. By fostering a deeper understanding of these parts and their relationships, IFS empowers individuals to address inner conflicts, reduce emotional distress, and cultivate a sense of balance and harmony.

What Are Parts?

In IFS, “parts” refer to distinct aspects of our inner selves. These parts can take on specific roles in response to life experiences, often as a way to protect us or help us navigate challenges.
There are three main types of parts:
  • Managers: These parts work proactively to maintain control and prevent harm by keeping us organized, responsible, and prepared.
  • Exiles: These parts hold painful emotions, memories, or experiences that we may push away to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • Firefighters: These parts step in when emotional pain feels unbearable, using coping mechanisms to numb or distract us from distress.
While each part has good intentions, their methods may sometimes conflict or create emotional distress.

Addressing Conflict Within Parts

At times, our parts may feel stuck in cycles of disagreement or distress. For example, a Manager part might push you to work tirelessly, while a Firefighter part might urge you to procrastinate as a form of relief. These inner conflicts can lead to feelings of guilt, frustration, or being "pulled in different directions."
Through IFS, we approach each part with curiosity, compassion, and openness. By understanding the unique roles and concerns of each part, we create an internal dialogue that fosters collaboration rather than conflict. This process allows us to unburden wounded parts and help protective parts adopt healthier roles, leading to greater emotional harmony.
