Somatic Therapy & Counselling in Coquitlam

What is Somatic therapy?

At the core of our work is the understanding that the mind and body are deeply interconnected. Somatic therapy acknowledges that our bodies hold onto the effects of past experiences, trauma, and stress, which can manifest as physical tension, discomfort, and chronic pain. Through this approach, we focus on both mind and body to help you process and release these stored emotions and stressors.

In somatic therapy, we use a combination of talk therapy and body-based techniques, such as breathing exercises, grounding practices, movement, and body awareness, to reconnect you with your body and help you tune into its wisdom. This approach is effective for addressing issues like anxiety, trauma, chronic stress, and emotional dysregulation.

What is somatization?

Somatization is the process by which emotional or psychological distress manifests as physical symptoms. These symptoms, which may range from pain and fatigue to gastrointestinal issues or unexplained sensations, often lack a clear medical explanation despite thorough examinations. Somatization is not a deliberate act but a subconscious response to stress, trauma, or unresolved emotional challenges.

Common Signs of Somatization

  • Persistent physical complaints without a clear medical cause.
  • Frequent doctor visits with inconclusive results or diagnoses.
  • Symptoms that intensify during stress or emotional upheavals.
  • Chronic pain or discomfort that doesn’t improve with standard medical treatment.

The Connection Between Mind and Body

The mind and body are deeply interconnected. When emotional pain or stress becomes overwhelming, the body can express this distress through physical symptoms. This phenomenon highlights how our emotional well-being directly impacts our physical health. Somatization is often a signal that deeper emotional or psychological issues need attention.

What Causes Somatization?

Somatization often arises as a coping mechanism for unresolved emotions. Factors that may contribute include:
  • Chronic stress or anxiety.
  • Trauma, especially unprocessed or suppressed trauma.
  • Family or cultural influences, where expressing physical pain is more acceptable than showing emotional vulnerability.
  • Lack of awareness or understanding of emotions.

How Somatic Therapy Works

Somatic therapy is a gentle, guided approach where you learn to recognize and understand the signals your body is sending you. Often, our bodies hold onto emotions and experiences that our minds may not be fully aware of or able to process alone. By fostering this mind-body awareness, somatic therapy helps you reconnect with yourself, which can be a powerful tool for healing.
This process might involve exercises such as:
  • Mindful Awareness: Focusing on bodily sensations to become more in tune with your feelings and experiences.
  • Breathing and Grounding Techniques: Using breathwork to stay present and grounded, especially during difficult emotions or memories.
  • Movement and Expression: Releasing tension and building body awareness through gentle movements and exercises.
  • Body Scanning: Gaining insights into the physical sensations associated with different emotions, thoughts, or memories.

Benefits of Somatic Therapy
Clients who engage in somatic therapy often find it helps them:
  • Reduce physical symptoms of stress and anxiety
  • Manage trauma responses in a way that feels safe and grounded
  • Develop a deeper sense of connection to themselves
  • Increase resilience to everyday stressors
  • Process emotions more effectively and reduce emotional overwhelm
Our somatic therapy sessions are tailored to your comfort level. This is a collaborative and client-centered approach, meaning you are always in control of the process. Somatic therapy offers a safe space to explore, understand, and work through the challenges you face while honoring the connection between mind and body.
Is Somatic Therapy Right for You?
If you’re looking for a holistic way to address emotional and physical symptoms, somatic therapy may be a helpful approach. This therapy can be particularly beneficial for those who have tried traditional talk therapy and are seeking a more integrative experience.
The Importance of Compassionate Care
For individuals experiencing somatization, being heard and validated is essential. Their symptoms are real and can significantly impact their quality of life, even without a clear medical cause. With a supportive, non-judgmental approach, individuals can work towards understanding and addressing the underlying emotional challenges contributing to their physical symptoms.
Somatization serves as a reminder of the intricate connection between our minds and bodies. By listening to what our bodies are telling us, we can embark on a journey toward holistic healing and well-being.
